Reality Labs Research (RL-R) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers and engineers to build the future of connection within virtual and augmented reality. We're developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses. The technology that is being developed within the Surreal team at FRL-R is a new generation of end-to-end real-time egocentric machine perception systems working across novel mobile sensor design, sensor fusion, state estimation, 3D computer vision and machine learning. The Surreal team is seeking an experienced Tech Lead System Engineer to lead a group of world-class researchers and engineers to build on a new end-to-end system prototype that brings tens of state-of-the-art technology together in order to demonstrate the ground breaking capabilities in all-day-wearable AR glasses.
Tech Lead, Egocentric Machine Perception System Engineering Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of applied research scientists and research engineers to design, build and iterate on complex SW-HW co-designed machine perception systems.
  • Proficient in c++ programming, and have a natural desire to bring clarity to system designs.
  • Partner with cross-organizational partners to transfer incubated technology to production teams
  • Champion engineering and operational excellence, establishing metrics and process for regular assessment and improvement of the system
  • Communicate proactively, effectively, and efficiently, both vertically within the Surreal team, and horizontally across different teams not only within Surreal, but also in cross-functional collaborations
  • Proactively learn the bigger context, and bring the right level of context wherever necessary to increase the team’s clarity and visibility
  • Help EMs drive/orchestrate cross-functional collaborations, understand their requirements and roadmap, identify commonalities, and further influence their development to accelerate the goals for the overall Surreal team’s mission
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of software engineering work experience in commercial environments, including 5+ years experience of leading multidisciplinary teams to deliver machine perception features
  • 8+ years of experience with real world system building, including design, proficient in coding with C++ (Python as a bonus) and evaluation/testing
  • 3+ years of experience in Object detection, Pose estimation, 3D Computer Vision algorithms, Reconstruction, Tracking and/or Deep Learning Frameworks
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with designing (products or open-source) software for robotic or AR/VR devices
  • Experience in real-time computer vision or modern GPU programming (CUDA, OpenGL, OpenCL)
  • Experience designing or developing complex cloud integrated machine perception architectures
  • Experience in embedded devices
  • Experience working in a Unix environment
