Reality Labs brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. Just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives. We are currently seeking innovative Research Scientists with experience designing and modeling advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. To be successful in this role, our research scientists must be comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional team and have experience in optical system design and fabrication.
Research Scientist, Advanced Optics Design (PhD) Responsibilities
  • Explore various photonic components and system concepts for next generation AR/VR display.
  • Conduct design, modeling, and optimization of next-generation near-to-eye display applications.
  • Build collaborative relationships both internally and externally to support product prototyping and research initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Experience with electromagnetic modeling and analysis of light propagation in nanoscale structures, anisotropic materials, films, or holographic elements.
  • Experience with methods of light propagation both in wave and ray domains as well as in mixed models.
  • Experience with optical design and modeling methods and tools for the areas such as imaging or illumination systems, diffractive optics, and polarization optics.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in applied research of waveguide-based near-to-eye display systems using components such as Volume Bragg Grating (VBG) and hologram.
  • Experience working with electromagnetic theory, modeling optical structures, running simulations, and building software tools for simulation work.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, or fellowships, as well as first-authored publications.
  • Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, tradeoffs, and diverse points of view to determine a path forward.
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.

About Meta
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
