WhatsApp is seeking a highly motivated and experienced team player to serve as Data Protection Counsel (Product) on WhatsApp Ireland’s Data Protection Team. The role is a great opportunity for any candidate who is keen to tackle some of today’s toughest and important legal challenges in this cutting-edge area of law. The role will focus on providing strategic and tactical legal counselling to internal legal, product, operations, and business teams within WhatsApp in order to identify and mitigate legal risks in all phases of product / feature development. You must have flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and organisational needs. In addition, you must have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have experience advising on the GDPR, ePrivacy, and general privacy regulatory compliance in respect of innovative products, good judgment, a strong work ethic, and a keen interest in learning about new technologies. WhatsApp Data Protection Counsel (Product) Responsibilities
  • Analyse products, data-related policies and initiatives to provide focused practical legal advice and risk mitigation strategies for products across multiple jurisdictions
  • Provide legal, product, engineering, policy and other business teams with legal advice, support and guidance on data-related laws and regulations
  • Monitor and assess new developments in data protection and information security (i.e., new laws, regulations, important judgements, regulatory guidance, etc.)
  • Support WhatsApp's data protection compliance and ensure accountability under applicable data-related laws and regulations
  • Liaise with outside legal advisors and represent the company before regulators and other relevant parties in the EEA/UK
  • Work with wider legal team on EEA/UK regulatory and litigation matters
Minimum Qualifications
  • Law degree
  • Minimum of 2 years PQE in data protection law, at a law firm, a data protection / other relevant authority and / or in-house legal team (applicable litigation, regulatory or more general product counselling experience will also be considered)
  • Proven in depth understanding of, and experience in advising on global data protection laws and in particular, GDPR and ePrivacy
  • Highly organised and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively while prioritising competing tasks
  • The successful candidate should also have:
    • Excellent problem-solving, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
    • Strong drafting skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and under significant time pressure
    • Genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new subject areas and translating that knowledge into actionable guidance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in product counselling
  • Advisory experience in adjacent areas of law such as DMA, DSA or OSA
  • Additional language skills beyond English
