We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives. Join the Display Systems Research (DSR) team, whose work spans next-generation AR/VR headsets, new types of computational displays, complex experimental systems, and AI-driven graphics. We are seeking a scientist to work at the intersection of basic and applied science. Members of our team have the opportunity to collaborate with academic institutions and publish their work. Projects can be studied with a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach thanks to internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering. We are currently seeking a Research Scientist to lead studies into next-generation computational imaging and display systems. This researcher will be responsible for collaborating across a broad cross-disciplinary team to investigate new technologies, particularly holographic display hardware and algorithms. Within this role, this researcher will be expected to leverage state-of-the-art hardware components (e.g., light sources, spatial light modulators, and emerging optical elements) as well as recent display algorithms (e.g., machine-learning-driven holographic display methods). As such, this researcher is expected to have experience in both optical bench prototyping, as well as modern graphics, computer vision, and machine learning methods. As a technical leader, this researcher is expected to have an established academic publication record, as well as demonstrated experience in mentoring (or managing) other scientists on complex, multi-year programs.
Research Scientist, Computational Imaging and Display Systems Responsibilities
  • Conceive and develop novel approaches for 3D acquisition and display that can be applied to virtual and augmented reality systems and subsystems, spanning both hardware (i.e., optical design and bench prototyping) and software (graphics, computer vision, and machine learning algorithms).
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary research and engineering teams, as well as external vendors, to implement proof-of-concept prototypes that redefine the state-of-the-art in virtual and augmented reality.
  • Contribute to cutting-edge research that results in industry-leading technology demonstrations and/or publications.
  • Identify new research opportunities and move the organization to pursue them.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Optical Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of post-graduate experience in translating research into hardware prototypes and functional systems.
  • 5+ years of publications demonstrating contributions to areas such as computational cameras and displays, holographic displays, machine-learning-based computational imaging systems, and related topics.
  • 7+ years of experience in system-level camera and display system prototyping, including individual work constructing bench-top systems and associated software.
  • 3+ years of experience with modern deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow or PyTorch).
  • 7+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Extensive background in holographic display methods, including hardware construction and algorithms.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Track record of solving a significant research science problem and/or having the sole responsibility/accountability of a technology path or vector with measurable outcomes.
  • Experience influencing business strategy by enabling new technologies.
  • Track record of coaching and developing team/colleagues to elevate the overall technical excellence of the organization, either in industry or academia.
  • Experience with AR/VR display devices and their requirements.
  • Extensive background in electromagnetism and optics, including work with illumination optics, imaging optics, waveguides, and display optics.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a cross-group and cross-culture team environment.
