Prior work on the use of language models (transformers) in mathematics has opened a number of potential collaborations with theoretical physicists. A project with Stanford Linear Accelerator, on predicting the scattering amplitude of 3 gluon collisions was initiated in February. Discussions about using transformers to identify jets from the Large Hadron Collider (in CERN), and to investigate the combinatorics of Calabi-Yau polytopes, used to model the vacuum in string theory, are underway. We would like to hire a postdoc with a background in theoretical physics (high energy physics preferred, string theory or astrophysics possible), and some prior experience with AI, and in particular language models
Postdoctoral Researcher - AI (Physics) Responsibilities
  • Lead research on the use of language models and transformers for theoretical physics
  • Engage in collaborations with external academic teams
  • Serve as a bridge between the theoretical physicists and the AI researchers
  • Take care of the AI side of the projects: building and tuning models, running experiments, interpreting results
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience in AI: transformers, running experiments
  • Experience in physics: high energy physics preferred, string theory or astrophysics possible.
  • Either PhD in physics with experience in AI, or PhD in AI with background in physics.
  • Computing environment : Python, Pytorch, Unix
Preferred Qualifications
  • Distributed environment : multi-GPU clusters, SLURM
