At Meta’s Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are seeking an innovative Material Scientist with experience in organic solid-state materials and processes. We are looking for innovators and system thinkers to discover solutions to complex problems, and who can design and implement processes that enable functioning components and modules. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, or similar, and with a strong background in optical system design and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team.
Material Scientist Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of computation, optics, chemistry, materials science, solid-state physics, and ME/EE researchers to approach optical solutions from new angles.
  • Own strategy from ideation to development of materials and processes for optical and electrical modules.
  • Ability to move fast with attention to details and solution development following best practices.
  • Own strategy from proof-of-concept to manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with extended teams to identify and develop critical industrial and research partners to develop and scale novel technologies.
  • 50% or more time expected in the lab to build your vision of the future.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years lab experience in one of the following areas: solid-state physics, crystal engineering, organic opto-electronics, organic semiconductors, thin film process and manufacturing.
  • 5+ years lab experience in material and process characterization.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities for complex problems.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a cross-group and multi-cultural environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Proven track record of success in taking technology from early concept to prototyping and early production.
  • Experience in one of the following areas: material discovery, (organic) semi-conductors, display module, photonics, and/or optical module.
  • Demonstrated experience in process and equipment design.
  • Broad knowledge of processes in organic/inorganic materials, process and applications.
About Meta
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
